It is only with extreme reluctance that anyone admits to these vessels being capital ships. Designed primarily as a short-range scout vessel these ships were little more than a mobile sensor platform with token armament of a single heavy plasma cannon. Built and fielded in pairs to allow for efficient exploration of a system without appearing overly hostile in the event they came across another civilisation.

After the loss of both the Pioneer and Voyager during early exploration the use of ships of this size was reconsidered; the remaining four vessels are scheduled to be decommissioned as soon as replacement hulls are complete.
